The Annual Report on the Maritime Economy, published every year by SRM, is compiled from the most significant research papers drawn up for the individual sections of the Observatory during the year, and with a set of economic-statistical indicators that allow a monitoring of the trend of the sector in Italy, and in Southern Italy in particular, considered in a European and global perspective.

Italian Maritime Economy. The Mediterranean as new key crossroads: outlooks, geomaps and Italy’s role on the Silk Road

Support our research project, register yourself and purchase the report

The 2017 Report on the Maritime Economy has now reached its fourth issue and is based on two mainstays. Firstly, there is an analysis of the principal economic data of the sector on a national and global scale, with updates on the features of ports and shipping in the global, European and Italian scene as well as in-depth analyses of routes and dynamics of traffic. Secondly, this volume deals with the evolution of Chinese investment in ports and maritime terminals in the Mediterranean and in Northern Europe, a topic SRM has been following regularly over the last few years. This phenomenon has already had an influence on the Mare Nostrum and will probably continue for a long time, as evidenced by the huge plan of infrastructural investment that the Dragon is implementing in order to complete the One Belt One Road Initiative. This project provides for the creation of seaborne and land routes which will allow China to expand its trade relationship with Europe and Asia through the implementation and improvement of  transport infrastructure. Analyses are supported by fascinating and thought-provoking case studies.

Italian Maritime Economy. Suez, the role of China, the new Panama Canal: from global routes a more central Mediterranean

The Third Annual Report analyses the new phenomena that are currently shaping trends in maritime trade and looks closely at the situation in Italy. The first part of the report is concerned with a study of the competitiveness and economic scenarios of the Italian maritime system through data, statistics and indexes that analyse the competitiveness of the country. In the second part there are two monographic papers: one is about the ports of the Northern Range whilst the other is about the Panama Canal. The first paper highlights the importance of the port of Antwerp for the Belgian economy and for the whole Northern Range area. It also provides a comparison with the ports of Rotterdam and Hamburg and it focuses on the potential developments of these ports which may take place as a consequence of the opening of the new Panama Canal. This event, in fact, will generate medium and long-term effects on maritime trade. This is why it has been analysed in the second monographic paper. This study has been made possible thanks to the know-how SRM acquired during a mission it carried out in Panama in April 2016, when all the main operators involved in the realization of the infrastructure were heard.

Italian Maritime Economy. Terminals, logistics and its players: challenges from a pivotal Mediterranean position Annual Report 2015

The second Annual Report identifies the three drivers that could be the turning points on which to invest from now on: 1) the infrastructural integration, the so-called intermodality; 2) the attraction of foreign investment for which the establishment of Free Zones can be a decisive factor; 3) a renewed need for a change in conceiving logistics; not just as a mere sector to revive but as a development factor for competitiveness that must be high on Italy’s agenda. More in detail the Report is divided in two parts: the first part concerns the current situation and prospects of Italian maritime economy in the competitive environment of the Mediterranean, focusing also on the strategic role that the South can play so that our country can seize the development opportunities offered by the Blue Economy. The second monographic part is an analysis of the Northern and the Southern Range. The Report SRM has enriched this study, full of Italian and foreign prestigious collaborations, with field research carried out in Hamburg, Suez and Tangier, where a team of researchers were on a mission to understand the ongoing phenomena.
